Why Fixer-Uppers Are Heating Up the Housing Market

Written by: Susan Richwine |

Not every home is move-in ready and that’s okay. In fact, most homes, even brand-new ones, leave the finishing touches up to the buyer. Whether it’s updating fixtures, painting walls, or reimagining entire spaces, chances are you’ll be rolling up your sleeves no matter what house you buy.

The real question is: how much work are you willing to do?

Some buyers prefer turnkey homes, while others are embracing the challenge of a fixer-upper. And lately, that second group is growing fast.

According to a recent analysis from Realtor.com, homes listed as “fixer-uppers” are getting serious attention. These homes that come with a little extra character are getting 52% more page views than comparable older homes. That’s a huge jump, and it’s not just about aesthetics. It’s about affordability and opportunity.

“Fixer-uppers give buyers a way to break into the housing market at a time when affordability is still stretched thin,” says Danielle Hale, Realtor.com Chief Economist. "For those with the vision and a toolbox, fixer-uppers provide both a starting point and the chance to create a home that's truly their own."

In other words, buyers are trading polished finishes for potential. They’re choosing charm over convenience, and investing in homes that reflect their personal style and sweat equity.

So if you're house hunting and feeling priced out, don’t overlook the listings that need a some love. With the right mindset (and maybe a few online tutorials) you could turn a diamond in the rough into your dream home.
